My locost build
The Locost
The Locost is a Lotus Seven Inspired Sports Car, it was designed by Ron Champion, Author of the best selling book "Build Your Own Sports Car For As Little As £250" published by Haynes.
Most people will call it a kit car but the Locost is really a 'special' as there is no kit - only a book.
Since publishing there have been various companies that have seen opportunities to help/cash in on people wanting to build a Locost. Some of these companies are listed in the links section. If you wanted to, you could now build a Locost in much the same way as you would a kit car - buying the components as you need them from the various suppliers.
I intend to do as much work myself as possible - the reason for this is not just as a way to keep the cost down but for my own pride. To be able to say "I built that" and have a sports car that will out perform any production car I could buy.
This is an example of a locost as I intend to build. This one was made by Keith Kirk and looks fantastic!
The story so far....
Since before I could drive I wanted to build a car.
I have had plans to build various kits over the past 17 years but having no place to assemble it, no money or family commitments have prevented this.
Then in 2000 I stumbled across the book "Build Your Own Sports Car For As Little As £250" (what a cheesy name!!!)
Having bought it from the local book shop I read it twice cover to cover - It was a riveting read!! ('scuse the pun!)
The £250 budget mentioned in the book is tough, although apparently the record so far is £47!!!
Most people seem to add a 0 to the books figure and create a very good example.
I also found two excellent sites, the Locost group in Yahoo groups (see links) and
www.locostbuilders.co.uk
these are both fantastic sources of information, encouragement and advise.
This started the planning stage. We were looking to move house so at the top of my list was a garage! My work had changed, so money was less of an issue, I also had two motor bikes, so I agreed with my wife to sell one to finance the car.. A budget!!!
Response from Family and Friends
Seggie, my wife, is quite supportive on this project. I initially had the threats of "If you start it you had better finish it!!....... "
and ... "I'm not having a half built car rotting on the drive for years..."
The response from the rest for the family and friends has generally been that the whole idea is going to be a joke - it will never be finished and will never get on the road.
Well we shall see!!
